In the European Union alone,
over 3 million tons
of feather waste are produced
from poultry farms.
At present, the recovery and recycling
of possible functional raw materials contained in such waste is almost non-existent.
In this project, we set out to address this problem developing an enzymatic method to extract keratin from waste feathers, and to modify its structure and properties to produce advanced materials for the textile and biomedical sectors.
